How can I get my free upgrade to Windows 10?
If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8, you should automatically qualify. If you do not have the GWX “Get Windows 10” app in your systray, you will need to run Windows Updates and apply the KB3035583 update.
If you do not get the update, you can always buy a version of Windows 10 for yourself:
Windows 10 Home – $119
Windows 10 Pro – $199
Can I apply, cancel my reservation, then reapply later?
You can, yes. The free Windows 10 upgrade will be available until July 29, 2016.
How much memory do I need?
A 32bit Windows 10 will run at 1GB – 2GB is recommended
A 64bit Windows 10 will run at 2GB – 4GB is recommended
Can I upgrade multiple machines?
You can upgrade every device that is running a “genuine” copy of Windows 7 or 8, but does not apply to corporate or education copies that are installed under a volume license.
Will I get Windows 10 Home or Pro?
That depends on what you have now. If you currently have Windows Home, then that’s the version of 10 you will get. If you currently have Windows Pro, you will be upgraded to 10 Pro.
Can I go from 32bit Windows to a Windows 10 64bit?
Not directly. 32bit will be upgraded to 10 32 bit, and the same with 64 bit. Moving from a 32bit to a 64 bit will require a clean installation.
If I upgrade to windows 10 and I don’t like it, can I downgrade back?
Microsoft is aiming to provde a “roll back” option, but this may not be successful. Make sure you back up or have a recovery media available before upgrading.

To remove the reminder, right-click on Start and select Properties. Next, go to the Taskbar tab, click the button that says “Customize ..”, and find GWX, the Get Windows 10 app. The drop-down menu offers the option to “Hide icon and notifications.”
To get rid of it completely, go to your Installed Windows Update section, and uninstall update KB3035583.
Will Windows 10 keep Microsoft Office intact?
It most cases, Windows 10 will be installed as an “in place” upgrade via Windows Update, which is usually used to install security patches. All your existing software should remain in place and should work with a few exceptions. Make sure you have a copy of your Office Product Key just in case.
Windows 10 Upgrade will remove:
- Windows Media Center
- Windows 7’s gadgets (clock, etc)
- Windows 7 games (solitare, hearts, minesweeper)
- OneDrive application from Windows Live Essentials
These programs can be downloaded free from the Windows Store.
Will it run XP programs?
Windows 10 will run most old Windows programs. You can check compatibility by running GWX, the Get Windows 10 app (the white windows icon in your taskbar.
How do I upgrade to Windows 10 on limited internet connections such as a Verizon MiFi?
There will be options available for those who cannot download through Windows Update, but these options have yet to be announced.
